From family functions to late-night study sessions, pizza is the food of choice for a wide variety of occasions in the U.S. It’s common knowledge that pizza was invented in Italy, but many people aren’t aware of the United States’ role in innovating the dish. Since October is National Pizza Month, here are a few fun facts you can share the next time you’re sharing a pie with friends or family.

Interesting Anecdotes About the History of Pizza in America

Popularity Boomed After World War II

Although the first pizza place, Lombardi’s, opened in New York City in 1905, the dish didn’t see widespread popularity until decades later. During World War II, American soldiers stationed in Europe were introduced to an eclectic array of cuisine. Once stateside, the soldiers craved the cheesy, saucy Italian staple. More eateries starting popping up to meet the growing demand.

Competition Led to Variety

pizzaFrom truffles to shrimp, it’s now possible to order all sorts of toppings for your pie. This variety in toppings began as early as the 1940s. In 1943, Ike Sewell opened Pizzeria Uno in the River North district of Chicago. To stand out from the competition, he offered patrons a different take on the ubiquitous pie. His version featured a bucket-shaped crust, filled with layers of toppings, sauce, and cheese. Commonly referred to as Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, the food is a staple of Windy City cuisine today.

October Became National Pizza Month

Pizza Today® publisher Gerry Durnell designated October as National Pizza Month in 1984. He did so to help promote his business and garner interest in the comfort food in Santa Claus, Indiana. Today, people throughout the country are encouraged to share their pizza photos on social media, order it at restaurants, and make it at home during the month of October.
