1. Unusual Sounds

When it is working properly, a heat pump should make little noise besides the hum of fans. If you hear clicking, grinding, squealing, or dripping sounds, something is likely wrong. Grinding noises indicate a lubrication problem with the motor, while squealing sounds could mean a belt is slipping. Dripping might be a sign that the condensate line is clogged, and clicking normally indicates a problem with one of the electrical components.

2. Short Cycling

As with a furnace, a heat pump is supposed to lie dormant until the thermostat calls for additional heating or cooling. At that point, the system engages and runs for a cycle of seven to 10 minutes, until the ambient air temperature has reached preset levels. If the heat pump repeatedly cycles on for a minute and then shuts off, it doesn't mean your home has reached the proper temperature. Instead, it means you need HVAC repairs. 3. Heat Pump Problems 

These usually occur when the system has a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is the fluid used to collect heat. The heated fluid then travels indoors or outdoors through a system of tubes, where it vents the heat—indoors in winter and outdoors in summer. If the system is not venting warm air, it likely means there is a refrigerant leak. First, the leak needs to be patched, and the refrigerant then needs recharging.
