With cold weather comes different needs for pest control. While some species disappear until spring, others are highly active during the fall and winter and want to find nice, warm places to inhabit. Insects, spiders, and rodents may decide your home is a perfect place for a nest. Since the best pest control is preventive, keep the following helpful tips in mind.

3 Ways to Implement Pest Control in Colder Weather

1. Clean Thoroughly

Sitting food attracts pests, so don’t leave any out—including crumbs and residue. Make sure every room is regularly vacuumed, swept, dusted, and wiped down. Get rid of trash, recyclable items, loose grass, and old scraps of fabric or paper that may be sitting either inside or outside the home, as they make great nesting materials.

Many bugs love firewood, too, so keep it a good distance away from your house and burn it quickly when you bring it inside.

2. Stay Dry

Damp areas lure in bugs, so proactive moisture control inside and outside your home is a valuable tool. Don’t leave standing water anywhere, and check that none of your faucets or pipes are leaking or having trouble draining properly. Remember that your air conditioner is prone to leaking, too, so even though you probably won’t use it in the winter, keep it well-maintained. In addition to preventing dampness, keep your home ventilated.

3. Leave No Openings

If you see any cracks, caulk them, no matter how small. Install a screen vent or cap in your chimney. Otherwise, it’s easy for tiny pests to wander into your home, drawn in by the warmth and moisture inside the walls.
