School is back in session, and kids are busy learning, participating in extracurricular activities, and playing with friends. All of that activity exposes them to germs that may make them sick. While a runny nose might not be enough to skip school, the below symptoms should keep your little one at home—and possibly send them to a doctor.

When Should You Keep Your Child Out of School?

1. Vomiting or Diarrhea

A bout of diarrhea or vomiting can be due to several reasons, from food poisoning to a stomach bug. These actions indicate that the body is trying to rid itself of something, like germs, that is causing it harm. Additionally, the loss of fluids leads to dehydration, leaving them weak.

2. Severe Pain

Pain is the body's way of alerting the brain to a problem. If your child has a light headache, they should be fine to get through the school day with medicine. If their discomfort is severe, however, skip school and take them to a doctor for a diagnosis.

3. Fever

If your child's forehead feels hot, doctortake their temperature. A fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or more indicates that the immune system is busy fighting off illness. Keep them in bed, so they get the rest they need to feel better and get rid of the sickness.

4. Coughing or Respiratory Problems

Any indication of breathing difficulties like wheezing or shortness of breath warrants a trip to the doctor immediately. Unstoppable coughing is also a problem. This symptom makes it tough for kids to learn during the day and also distracts other students.

5. Pink Eye

Symptoms of conjunctivitis include itchiness, redness, and swelling around the eye. Sometimes pus is visible. Pink eye is highly contagious, so you should keep your little one away from other kids at school until the doctor gives the go-ahead.
