Dentures are one of the easiest and most affordable ways to replace missing teeth. Dentures can better facilitate your chewing and restore your smile to its former glory. With proper care, a single set can last anywhere from five to eight years. If you recently got dentures, or you’re thinking about getting a set soon, learn the following do’s and don’ts so you can ensure that they last.

Do:

Clean them daily.

Dentures may not decay like natural teeth, but they can still accumulate food particles and bacteria. As such, they should be cleaned regularly. Using a specially formulated cleaners that's non-abrasive, brush your dentures and plates twice a day. You should also floss between the teeth once a day and clean your gums before placing the dentures back in your mouth. Never use toothpaste on dentures.

Soak them when not in use.

Dentures are comprised of several different kinds of materials, some of which can become brittle if they dry out. To prevent your dentures from cracking, soak them in a dentist-approved solution whenever they’re not in your mouth.

Don’t:

Run them under hot water.

Hot water can make certain components of the dentures so malleable that they eventually lose their shape. It’s okay to use tepid water when cleaning your dentures, but avoid running them under hot water. Should they warp, it will affect your bite and could even irritate the gums to the point that sores develop.

Apply whitening products.

denturesTo ensure that they look natural, dentures are rarely stark white. If you want a brighter smile, though, talk to your dentist about removing stains or replacing the teeth altogether. In the meantime, avoid over-the-counter whitening products. These formulas contain abrasive stain removers that can damage dentures beyond repair.
