As the summer ends and fall approaches, the cooler air settles in around you. Just like you swap out shorts for jeans, there are some actions you need to take with your plumbing system to ensure it’s ready to handle the upcoming seasons ahead. Here are a few tips to protect your pipes through the colder weather.

How to Protect Your Pipes in the Fall

1. Insulate the Pipes

When the cold settles in, it can cause the water in your pipes to freeze. To prevent this from happening, have a plumber adequately insulate all of the pipes, especially the ones that are connected to an outdoor wall. Not only will this help prevent your pipes from freezing, but it will also keep the warm air inside your home.

2. Stop All Outdoor Plumbing

plumbingAn outside hose can be used for watering plants, cleaning a mower, or washing a car. However, since these are activities are typically reserved for the spring and summer, they won't get any use in the colder months. Disconnect any hoses and completely turn off all of the external water valves to prevent them from freezing or bursting as the weather changes.

3. Check the Water Heater

During the colder months, your water heater tends to work harder because it’s used much more often. With the amount of work that it does, it should be operating correctly. If you notice any leaks or have discolored water, schedule repairs ahead of the cold season, so you don't run into any problems when you need the system the most.
