Invisalign® treatment uses clear plastic trays to comfortably straighten teeth and give you a beautiful smile. Just like braces, they need to be cleaned and serviced to serve their purpose. Proper care and maintenance are essential to Invisalign's effectiveness, and there are several things you can do at home. To help you best look after your aligners, keep the following dos and don'ts in mind.

Do:

Rinse them every time you take them out.

The aligner trays can quickly accumulate food particles and dried saliva. If not thoroughly rinsed off, this buildup can affect the optimal positioning of the aligners, and it can also encourage the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. Get in the habit of rinsing off your Invisalign every time you remove them. Wash them under cold or room temperature running water, but never put them near hot water or into a dishwasher, as the heat will damage the plastic.

Clean Invisalign with mild antibacterial soap.

Invisalign Butler County, OHYou may be tempted to use toothpaste to clean and sanitize your aligners. However, most kinds of toothpaste contain ingredients that are abrasive to plastic surfaces. Instead, use a mild, clear antibacterial soap. First, wash your hands, then wholly rinse the aligners. Apply a few small drops of soap to the trays and a bit more water. With clean fingers, very gently massage the soap into the aligner trays, working up a light lather. Finally, give them another good rinse until all soap residue is gone.

Don't:

Soak in mouthwash.

Mouthwashes have chemicals and dyes that can corrode and discolor your Invisalign. Only soak the aligners in a clear retainer solution recommended by your dentist or orthodontist. Be sure to wash the trays thoroughly before submerging them in the solution, and always rinse them off after soaking.

Forget to purchase extra cases.

A hard case protects the aligners when they aren't in your mouth. Purchase several cases and keep them in various places for quick and convenient access. Have one by your bed, one by the bathroom sink, one in the car, one in your backpack or purse, and one in a zippered compartment on your suitcase. You don't want to be stuck somewhere without a case. The trays could become damaged or collect bacteria after sitting out for lengthy periods.
