There are many preventative and restorative practices used in dentistry, all designed to give you a confident smile. One common dental care practice is the use of dental crowns. As common as they are, you may not know much about them. Here’s what you should know about crowns from start to finish.

What You Should Know About Dental Crowns

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a “cap,” or cover, used to protect teeth from damage and decay. They’re typically a permanent cover for a single tooth intended to help patients recover bite strength and confidence with their smile. A tailor-made crown should look and feel just like a natural tooth. Common materials used for crowns include metal, ceramic, and porcelain.

Why Are Dental Crowns Needed?

They can also be used to hold a broken tooth together or to keep a dental bridge in place. A dentist may also use a crown to cover misshapen or discolored teeth for cosmetic reasons.

What is the Procedure Like?

Dental crowns are installed over two separate visits. During the first appointment, your dentist will take a print of your tooth and bite as well as x-rays. They use this data to create a 3D model of your tooth which will be used to create the permanent cap. At the follow-up appointment, the cap will be fitted over your tooth using a permanent cement. Finally, your bite will be adjusted to ensure the proper fit.

How Should I Care for My Dental Crown?

A crown should be cared for in the same manner as your natural teeth. Brush and floss twice a day to remove plaque and buildup from the area, and rinse with a fluoride mouthwash. Check your crown regularly to make sure there are no breaks and that it’s still fitted securely. If your crown comes loose or doesn’t feel right after a couple of weeks, see your dentist.
