Toilet leaks are common plumbing problems that can be caused by a variety of factors. If your toilet is leaking, it's going to need to be off-limits until it's fixed, since flushing could lead to puddles that can damage the floor. To avoid this inconvenient problem in the future, be on the lookout for these typical causes.

Why Is Your Toilet Leaking?

1. Cracked Tank

The force of an object banging into the tank can cause the porcelain to crack. When the fill valve opens and water rises, it'll seep out of the crevice. This will continue to happen until a plumber installs a new tank. To reduce the risk of accidents, don't store heavy items on shelves near your toilet.

2. Warped Flapper

plumbingAfter flushing, the flapper helps water leave the tank and flow into the bowl. Although this part typically lasts four to five years, chemicals in drain cleaners could shorten its lifespan. Mineral buildup can also warp the flapper, preventing it from forming a secure seal along the valve seat. While this will cause water to seep from the tank, a plumbing technician can replace the deteriorating flapper easily.

3. Rusted Pipes

Chemical cleaners and contaminants in water can slowly eat away at pipes connected to your toilet. When water flows through the rusty channels, it could leak out of tiny holes in the metal. In this case, a plumber should replace the worn-out installations to stop the leak and prevent others in the future.
