Your septic system is responsible for processing waste from your household and purifying the water before releasing it into the ground. There are two different types of systems—aerobic and anaerobic—and the kind you need depends primarily on your land and budget. Here’s what you need to know about standard and aerobic septic systems.

Standard vs. Aerobic Septic Systems

Standard

Standard septic systems are anaerobic, which means their bacteria do not require oxygen to thrive. After liquid waste rises to the top of a tank, anaerobic bacteria break down bottom-of-the-tank solid waste. Purified wastewater exits the tank and flows into the drain field via a system of small tubes. Percolating through the soil, clean water from your septic system will eventually find its way into the groundwater

Aerobic

septic systemsAn aerobic septic system uses a series of three tanks to treat a home’s wastewater. In the first compartment, also known as the trash trap, wastewater separates into solid and liquid layers. In the second compartment, an aerator powers on to circulate oxygen through the waste, activating aerobic bacteria to break down impurities. Lastly, the wastewater moves into a third septic compartment for additional clarifying before it trickles out into the drain field and down into the groundwater.

Which Is Right for Your Property?

Though aerobic septic systems treat wastewater more efficiently and effectively than standard systems, they are typically more costly. They also require less drain field space. In addition, aerobic systems need power to operate. If problems develop, an alarm sounds to let homeowners know to call their septic system service.
