Porcelain veneers are a great solution to chips, gaps, and stains. However, they aren’t invincible and will require regular care. To avoid decay, further staining, and other oral health issues, make sure you use the following tips every day.

How to Care for Porcelain Veneers

1. Brush & Floss

porcelain-veneers-ronald-w-ristow-ddsBrushing and flossing are crucial to maintaining your porcelain veneers. They remove plaque, decay-causing bacteria, and food particles that can cause stains. This is especially important around the gum line. When plaque builds up in this area, it can lead to gingivitis, and later, gum disease. With proper dental care, porcelain veneers can last upward of five years.

2. Avoid Nonedible Objects

Don’t treat your dental veneers like tools. Never bite your fingernails, open containers, or gnaw on nonedible objects like pencils. You’ll gradually wear them down and chip or pull them loose. Be mindful of tough foods, as well. Never chew ice, and try steaming raw vegetables and other hard foods, so they put less stress on your teeth.

3. Watch Out for Stain-Causing Foods & Drinks

Your porcelain veneers can be stained just like your teeth. Watch out for coffee and tea. These contain stain-causing tannins. Berries, pasta sauces and curries, and wine are also common culprits. Avoid sticky artificially colored gummy candies and sports drinks. If they change the color of your tongue, they’ll likely change the color of your veneers.
