When your child wakes up under the weather, it can leave you on the fence about whether they should stay home or go to school. Rest is essential, and schools can be breeding grounds for illnesses, which is why many have guidelines on when children should stay home. If your child experiences the following symptoms, it’s best to keep them home and possibly seek pediatric care attention.

Symptoms That Warrant a Sick Day for Your Child

1. Coughing & Runny Nose

If your child is coughing or has a runny nose, it can be OK to send them to school. If these symptoms are accompanied by wheezing or respiratory pain, however, it means the condition is worsening. Even without breathing problems, keep in mind that cough and congestion make it difficult for children to focus and play. If they become more frequent, keep your child home.

2. Fever

Fever often isn’t accompanied by other symptoms, which can make it easy to send them to school. However, it’s associated with many viruses that your child may spread to other kids. Play it safe by keeping them home. If their fever continues to climb, visit an urgent care clinic.

3. Vomiting & Diarrhea

Vomiting and diarrhea can be a symptom of food poisoning, the flu, and other viruses. They’re both uncomfortable and distracting in the classroom, so keep your child home. It’s important to keep your child hydrated. Most pass within 24 hours, and you’ll help avoid spreading the illness at school. However, if either symptom becomes overly painful or frequent, seek pediatric care.
