If you are planning a bathroom remodeling project, you may have to choose between installing either a shower or a tub. One concern you may be considering is which option conserves the most water. Which choice is better, and how can you improve their efficiency?

Is a Shower or Bath Better for Water Conservation?

Shower

bathroom remodelingThe short, simple answer is that a shower is your better choice for saving water, but there are factors that can affect that determination. In general, a wash down that lasts less than ten minutes is enough to get you clean without wasting too many resources.

Showers that last 20 minutes or longer, however, don’t conserve as much water. If you enjoy lengthy showers, choose a low-flow showerhead that has a speed adjuster during your next bathroom remodeling update. Another popular option is a steam shower because the steam helps to clean you, so you’ll use less water.

Bath

On average, bathing in a tub will use more water than a shower. Filling a tub can use up to 70 gallons depending on the size of the basin, which compared to 25 gallons in a shower is a huge amount

If you can’t part with your daily soak, there are ways to reduce the amount of wasted water. Avoid filling the tub to the top, and only fill it about halfway. Another trick is to plug the tub immediately instead of letting the water run until it’s warm.
