Though in most cases, vehicle batteries die as a result of heavy use or age, they may also cease to function if they are overcharged. In addition to causing breakdowns, this can damage your car’s mechanical components and the battery. An auto shop will help you avoid this by replacing your unit for you when the charge runs out. Informing yourself about this will also keep you safe if you use a trickle charger at home. Here’s more information about this problem.

Your Guide to Battery Overcharging

What Is It?

Battery overcharging occurs when the voltage in the equipment exceeds the level required for proper operation. When this happens, sulfuric acid and distilled water within the battery begin to boil, generating excessive heat. Hydrogen also builds up in the cells, which increases the pressure beneath the casing.

How Does This Happen?

Faulty voltage regulators in transmissions systems can cause batteries to overcharge. If you charge your own unit, using high amp settings or leaving the battery on the charger for too long can also cause this issue.

How Can You Tell if a Battery Is Overcharged?

In more severe cases, it may become hot to the touch and even swell or melt. Due to increased pressure, it’s possible for the part to catch on fire.

How Can You Prevent This?

Prevent battery overcharging by using a multimeter to check the voltage of your unit after charging. When idle, it should read about 12.6 volts. If the reading exceeds 14.8 volts while your car is running, get in touch with an auto shop to replace your battery.
