Regardless of the time of the year, you rely on the HVAC system to operate at peak performance to keep you comfortable. To keep your HVAC unit working correctly, the system needs to be regularly maintained, including changing the air filters periodically. Here’s what you need to know about air filters and why you need to replace them.

What Is an Air Filter?

Just like the other devices in your home, the HVAC system also requires proper cleaning, so it can continue to run at top performance. Whenever dust, pollen, and pet hair get into the ductwork, they can cause the system to work harder. It’s the job of the air filter to ensure these particles aren’t built up in the ducts or blown into your house. Ideally, the air filter should be replaced every three or four months.

Why Do Air Filters Need to Be Replaced?

air filtersWith dust, pet hair, and other particles floating around in the air, a filter needs to be replaced to prevent build up. If a filter is clogged, debris will continue to float around in the air, causing issues for people with allergies or asthma. A clogged filter also causes the HVAC unit to work harder, increasing your energy bills and shortening the system’s life span.

How Do You Replace an Air Filter?

Since HVAC units vary by brand and type, the process for replacing the filter might be different, depending on your specific system. Generally, however, the unit should be shut off before you attempt to replace the filter. After removing it, take a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment and clear out the dust that might have remained in the system.
