A jammed garbage disposal can be a frustrating experience, leading to a clogged drain, blocked pipes, and big messes to clean up. And digging around with your hands inside a garbage disposal is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. If your kitchen sink has a clogged disposal, always unplug the unit before working on it and try one of the three solutions discussed below.

How to Unjam a Garbage Disposal

1. Reset the Unit

Most disposals have a reset button underneath. After unplugging from the power source, look under the unit for a red button—which is sometimes called a thermal overload switch—and see if it's sticking out. If so, push the button back in to reset the unit. The button protrudes when the disposal overheats, so pushing it back in may get the unit working again. Wait about 15 minutes for the disposal to cool down, then plug it back in and try again.

2. Try a Plunger

diggingFor a clog in the disposal's drainpipe, try a sink plunger; this is different from a standard one because it lacks a neck. Place the suctioned base over the clogged drain opening in the sink and give it a few forceful up-and-down movements. Plug the unit back in and run water into the drain to see if the drain is clear.

3. Cleaning the P-Trap

The P-trap is a curved section of pipe beneath your sink that’s designed to hold water. The device is a useful liquid barrier against foul sewer odors, but it’s also prone to debris buildup and may require occasional cleaning. Before starting, empty the base cabinet of all items and position a bucket under the P-trap to minimize mess. Pry off the joint nuts at either end of the curve with a wrench. Use a bottle brush or other implement to clear out any gunk inside the removed piece. Reassemble the unit by putting the joint nuts back on the mounted pipes, reattaching their respective O-rings, and then lodging the trap end in place.
