Many parents and guardians are unsure whether they should start potty training their children before enrolling them in day care. There is no concrete age at which to begin this process. However, there are some signs that your child may be ready. Below are a few ways you can tell that your child is ready to begin potty training.

4 Signs It’s Time to Potty Train Your Child

1. They’re on a Schedule

Thanks to their body clocks, many toddlers use the bathroom at similar times each day. When you want to start potty training, use this personal schedule to your advantage by encouraging your child to use the bathroom at these times. You’ll be more successful in this endeavor if you work with their natural timing.

2. They’re Curious About the Potty

day careMany people purchase a child-size toilet and place it in the bathroom to encourage their kids to try it out. At first, the child may not notice or care for it. However, they may eventually show interest in using the potty, at which point you can begin regularly teaching them to use the toilet.

3. They Don’t Want to Wear Diapers

Toddlers often decide that they don’t want to wear diapers anymore when they’re ready to use the potty. They may remove the diaper during nap time or throw a fit when the day care teachers try to put one on at school. At this point, let the kid know that they can stop wearing a diaper soon if they learn how to use the potty. Turn this important developmental step into a fun goal for them to work toward.

4. They Talk About Body Functions

At some point, many toddlers start announcing their body functions. They may voice that they have to use the toilet or make other noticeable indications like noises or dance-like motions because they need to use the bathroom. If you know these signs, bring the toddler to the restroom right away to ensure they can try using the potty.
