It isn’t always easy to know when you should visit a dermatologist, especially if you don’t have an ongoing skin issue. However, routine dermatology appointments can screen for dangerous conditions like skin cancer, making them an essential component of preventative care. This is especially true if you have moles, as these harmless spots are prone to problems relating to sun exposure. Here are three signs you should get your mole checked by a dermatologist.

When Should a Mole Be Professionally Inspected?

1. It’s Especially Large

Since skin cancer is a disease that can cause abnormal skin cells to grow, an unusually large mole should raise red flags. Look for moles that are larger than a pencil eraser or irregularly shaped. Problematic moles are also often asymmetrical, which means one side of the growth doesn’t match the other.

2. It’s Bothering You

Sometimes moles can hurt, itch, or bleed, and large moles can even get caught on clothing. A mole on the scalp is also one to look out for. These moles may not bother you daily, but they can be dangerous since the top of your head typically receives the most sun exposure. Turn to your dermatologist if you have a mole that is bothering you, or if you discover a new mole on your head.

3. It’s Been Changing

If a mole is something to worry about, it may evolve over the years. The mole may start to develop different colors within its borders, or it may grow larger or change in texture. If you aren’t sure if a mole is changing, take pictures of the growth over time and compare the images.
