A terrace is a raised level of the land, typically held in place by masonry or another stabilizing material. In many cases, they form by excavating the soil into terraces that rise gradually, one above the other, in a series of tiers. Below is a brief introduction to terraces, how they work, and the purposes they serve.

Building Terraces

The first step to building a terrace is excavating the land. A company digs a trench for the first tier, and, the more tiers it has, the deeper this trench is. Then, another trench creates the sides of the terrace, and this one must be the same depth as the first one. Next, an excavator will anchor spikes around the trench where you want to place the masonry or other wall material. The next level is then layered on top of the first, followed by more anchoring spikes, and further tiers.

Benefits

Terraces serve a few different excavatingpurposes. First of all, they're decorative and transform a yard or garden into an eye-catching and dramatic landscape. But they serve practical functions as well. They make sloping lawns and gardens easier to care for, and they control soil erosion and rainwater, giving water runoff somewhere to go, rather than rushing down an unencumbered slope.

Considerations

Before building a terrace, you should contact your local utility company to make sure no underground pipes or lines are running beneath the property. When you hire an excavating company to build a terrace, they should include this as part of the job, ensuring your lawn is safe, protected, and stable.
