Noises are not uncommon with running vehicles, but when they're louder than usual, chances are you need auto repairs soon. Note where the sound is coming from and what changes are happening in your car's operations. Below are some of the sounds indicate the need for repairs.

5 Car Noises You Should Never Ignore

1. Hissing or Sizzling

A hissing or sizzling sound means there's fluid leaking out and landing on a hot metal surface. When you notice it after switching off the engine, look for signs of smoke or steam coming from your hood to pinpoint the source. Note the smell—if it's sweet, then it’s likely the coolant leaking. Should the sound continue for a while, have an auto repair specialist identify the issue as it might be your engine oil, too.

2. Squealing

If your car squeals when you hit the brakes, your pads are likely worn out and require replacement. If you hear the squeal under the hood or as you accelerate, it's probably a loose accessory or serpentine belt that needs to be changed.

3. Grinding or Growling

This means that you've gone through the pads and the rotors are grinding against the caliper, causing further damage to your brakes. If you hear a low growl when driving, you likely have a bad wheel bearing that requires professional attention.

4. Popping or Clunking

Any popping or snapping sound indicates a failing constant velocity (CV) joint that connects the transmission to the wheels. If you hear the noise whenever you round a corner, have it checked in an auto repair shop before you lose control of your vehicle.

The clunking sound from under your hood could also signal troubles with the valves, connecting rods, or pistons in the engine.

5. Rattling or Rumbling

Rattling is often a sign that a part is loose. This can affect your safety, especially if it's your ball joint, tie rod, or lug nut. If the rattle comes from under the car, your exhaust system may be problematic. Rumbling or sputtering points to issues with the muffler or leaks, but if there's a sound akin to rocks shaken in a box, then the trouble is likely with your catalytic converter.
