Preschool and kindergarten are important phases in your child’s education. They aren’t interchangeable terms, however. Each learning program is geared toward a different age group and has unique goals. Below, you’ll find what makes each special so you can prepare to enroll your little one when the time comes.

Preschool

These programs are generally for children aged 2 ½ to 4 ½, though some learning centers may have exceptions. The goal of preschool is to provide children with social experiences and opportunities to develop a love for learning. Children may attend full or half days in a public or private setting.

There, they are introduced to a wide scope of topics in a fun, developmentally appropriate classroom. Degreed teachers will use learning games, open play, art, music, and other activities to introduce them to language arts, science, math, social studies, and the arts.

Activities may also focus on sensory and motor skill development. Child development programs encourage socialization to help them learn to make friends. Children are allowed to play in indoor and outdoor areas, with teachers and their peers.

Kindergarten

This is the beginning of your child’s formal education. Students typically begin at age five and sometimes have to take admissions tests.

Teachers focus on core topics the students will encounter in grade school, including math, reading, social studies, science, music, and art. They often follow a state curriculum, and the child will receive both individual and group instruction.

Kindergarten also includes outdoor playtime and a lunch period. Children generally attend for five full or half days a week.
