Algae buildup is an inevitable part of a freshwater fish tank. These slimy deposits can taint the water and other aspects of the tiny ecosystem. Rather than constantly cleaning, you can invest in a few algae-eating freshwater fish. Try the following affordable options.

Fish That Will Clean Your Freshwater Tank

1. Otos

Otos, also known as the pygmy suckermouth, grow to roughly 2 inches and usually live in schools. They love to eat algae from the sides of a freshwater fish tank and will also clean it from any decorations. Because they’re small, they won’t take up much space, and they can also maneuver in hard-to-reach areas other algae-eating fish can’t.

2. Plecos

freshwater-fish-gerbers-tropical-fishPlecos are another suckermouth and the most common algae-eating fish in freshwater tanks. They grow larger than Otos—up to 2 feet in some cases—so they can’t do as much micro-level cleaning. They have a big appetite, though, and they also require very little care. They also prefer to be alone, so you’ll only need to purchase one for your small or large freshwater tank.

3. Black Mollies

Black mollies are popular algae-eaters that also look unique, so they’ll blend in well with your exotic freshwater fish. They’re natural scavengers and will always be on the hunt for algae. They grow up to 4 inches, and like the Plecos and Otos, require little care. They prefer to live in schools, and you should purchase two females for every male.
