Picking out the curtains for your home is a big job. They must not only match your decor but also perfectly fill the space of your window to block out the light. Before you can begin choosing the window treatments, you’ll need to take measurements. If you’ve never measured for curtains before, this quick guide can show you how.

How to Read Measurements

As you begin browsing for curtains, you’ll notice a series of numbers that tell you the measurements; for example, 54” x 63”. The first number is always the width. Typically, curtain lengths start at 63”, then increase to 84”, 95”, 108”, and 120”.

How to Measure Length

Window TreatmentsBefore you measure for length, you’ll need to determine how far you want your window treatments to extend. Start the tape measure at the top of the pole unless you plan on using rings, in which case you should start from just underneath.

If you want your curtains to end above the windowsill, measure from the pole to 1 cm above the sill. If you want them to dip below the sill, measure to 15 cm beyond. Floor-length curtains are measured from the pole to 1 cm above the floor.

How to Measure Width

For tracks, measure along the top from one end to the other. If you’re using a curtain pole, measure its length. A pole should extend 15–20 cm on either side of the window so when the curtains are closed, they’re out of the way.

When choosing curtain panels, choose two of the same width as the window. For example, if the pole is pole is 48 inches in width, select two 48-inch panels instead of two 24-inch panels. The bunched effect is more attractive than a flat look when the curtains are closed.
