Classic and antique cars are often passed down through generations or sought after by serious collectors. Taking the time to care for your ride will ensure it remains attention-grabbing and functional for years to come. To keep your investment in great shape and help it turn heads at a car show, here are a few tips.

3 Maintenance Tips for Classic Car Owners

1. Remember to Wash & Wax

Washing the car protects the paint and metal underneath. Don’t go through an automatic car wash or use a garden hose. This will cause uneven drying, increasing the risk of rust spots forming. Instead, use a sponge and detergent to clean the car by hand. You can make sure each corner and crevice is spotless. Avoid products with abrasives, as they could scratch the finish. Use a microfiber cloth to get surfaces completely dry. Routine waxing will restore the gleaming appearance of your antique car.

2. Drive It at Least Once a Month

antique carsTo minimize the risk of damage, the car probably isn’t used as your main mode of transportation. However, keeping it tucked away in the garage for long periods can cause harm, too. That’s because the battery could die, resulting in the need for replacement. The tires could also become flat in the spots that touch the ground, compromising handling and safety when you do get behind the wheel. To prevent these problems, drive at least once a month. Doing so will also keep the seals and rubber lubricated to prevent premature wear.

3. Invest in a Good Cover

Regardless of where you store the antique car, make sure it remains covered when not in use. Outside, it will keep moisture, sap, bird droppings, and environmental pollutants off of the auto paint. Indoors, the cover will keep dust from collecting and take the impact if anything falls on the car.
