Firmness is a key factor when considering a new custom mattress. Firmness is not the same thing as support itself, but it plays an integral part in the overall comfort of a great night’s sleep. The guide below outlines what firmness is and how it affects your sleep.

What Is Firmness?

The firmness level of a mattress is derived from the top comfort layers of the custom mattress, and the firmness of the coil. The firmness level is subjective, The firm coil with a soft foam will conform to your body without a lot of sink into the coil. It will keep you flat but with a soft feel.

What Is the Firmness Scale?

Mattress manufacturers may use different adjectives to describe how soft, plush, or cloud-like a mattress is, but they all follow the same firmness scale.

  • 1-Extremely Soft: It is extremely soft, and many manufacturers don’t make these anymore.Usually a soft coil with a soft foam.
  • 2 to 3-Soft: They are soft and will conform to the body as it sinks into the mattress.
  • 4 to 6-Medium-Soft, Medium, Medium-Firm: These levels offer minimal sink with an underlying firmness.
  • 7 to 9-Firm to Extra Firm: There is a limited amount of softness or sinking. It is a flat and supportive surface.
  • 10-Extremely Firm: This mattress is rare, usually a firm coil with extremely hard foam. Not much give here.

What Is the Right Option for You?

Custom MattressThe aspects to consider when purchasing a custom mattress are your individual comfort level, weight, sleeping position. As a standard rule, the less you weigh, the less firm the mattress should be. As weight increases, the body sinks further into the mattress, so a firmer mattress avoids sinking too deeply. If you are less than 130 pounds, you don’t need a firm coil or a firm foam for the right comfort level. Those over 230 pounds may find they need a firm coil for support and a medium to firm foam.

Back and stomach sleepers take up more area per square inch and don’t sink as far. Combination sleepers are averaged in the 4 to 6 range to allow optimal sleep in any position.

Softer mattresses conform to the body and produce less motion transfer to a partner.
