Since fresh air and exercise is beneficial for your pet, you may be thinking about installing a custom dog kennel in your outdoor space. You’ll first need to decide on its size, so keep these guidelines in mind to build the right kennel for your animal.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Size

Before you start talking with a contractor, check where you have enough room for the dog kennel in your outdoor space. Ideally, it should have both light and shade. The ground should be flat with a soft surface that doesn’t get too hot in the sun, such as grass.

Play games with your dog to see how high they can jump, and select a fence that exceeds that height. Keep in mind that some smaller breeds can jump higher than larger ones, so don’t only base the fence height on the size of the pet.

Additionally, talk with your fencing contractor about burying chicken wire or chain link underground to keep your dog from digging out of the enclosure.

Dimensions to Start With

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recommends starting with either a 10-by-10-foot or a 5-by-15-foot kennel. But the more space a pet has, the more comfortable and active they have the chance to be. The kennel should also be at least six feet high.
