Propane is an exceptionally clean-burning fuel that also happens to emit more heat per unit than other varieties of gas, making it perfect for home heating, cooking, and fueling certain heat-generating appliances, such as dryers. However, before you can take advantage of this incredible fuel source, you have to store propane on your lot. Here are a few important aspects of storing propane you should keep in mind.

How Does Size Impact Placement?

Propane tanks range in size from small, portable varieties to tanks capable of storing 30,000 gallons of fuel. Size impacts placement significantly since the larger the fuel levels, the larger the fire risk if the tank were to be compromised. For small 20-pound and 33-pound tanks, there are no formal placement restrictions, although any combustible fuel source should be stored outdoors.

propaneHowever, 100-pound tanks should have a minimum distance of 3 feet from a window or door, and a minimum distance of 5 feet from an ignition source. Larger 500-gallon tanks should be placed at least 10 feet from a building and any ignition source. While 1000-gallon tanks match the clearance recommendation of 10 feet from a building or ignition source, when multiple units are installed, a clearance of 25 feet should be observed.

How Should You Maintain Your Tank?

Because rust can corrode the protective tank, it is important to keep your propane tank as clean as possible. Consider using a cover recommended by a propane professional when it is not in use or storing portable tanks inside covered garages or carports.

Valves should also be checked periodically for leaks by spraying the closed valve with a soapy solution and watching for bubbles to form. Try to keep propane tanks from being placed in areas that receive direct sunlight, as warmth and fuel sources do not mix well. Ideal spots include naturally shaded areas where other structures aren’t present.
