Winning boxing matches isn’t only about throwing a lot of punches. Good technique is also a leading factor in success. Below are some of the ways in which proper technique allows you to perform at the top of your game.

3 Reasons Why Boxers Need Correct Technique

1. Avoid Injury

Every punch you throw exerts force on your hands, and the possibility of damage will be significantly increased if you don’t have the right technique.

For the majority of punches, the wrist on the punching hand should be in a horizontal position with your thumb to the side rather than at the top. This makes the wrist more stable because it’s in its natural position.

With the right technique, the center of your fist should connect solidly with the target. You’re then less likely to clip the opponent with your thumb or the outer part of your hand, which are more susceptible to injury.

2. Conserve Energy

Keeping your punches tight and drawing power from your legs and torso with a stable stance will result in more accurate blows. On the other hand, wild, wide swings drain energy.

Technique also includes breathing properly. Rather than panting and struggling to get air, breathing in slowly through your nose, then exhaling sharply through your mouth when you punch will control your diaphragm and allow for more strength. Using a mix of jabs and power shots also conserves energy.

3. Win Boxing Matches

Accuracy achieved through correct technique not only saves energy but also allows you to land powerful punches. These kinds of skilled punches are what judges base their decisions on if the bout goes to the scorecards.

You’ll also be able to feint punches before landing a surprise shot, whereas poor technique lets the opponent know what you're going to do.

Technique is about defense as well as offense. The right footwork and guard will let you weather your opponent’s blows or dodge them completely.
