In the heat of a summer afternoon, everyone enjoys jumping into a crystal-clear pool that’s cool and refreshing. However, if you have the pool that friends and family enjoy flocking to, proper swimming pool maintenance can keep you busy. Here are some of the most common pool supplies that you should have to keep your pool water clean and clear.

Important Pool Cleaning Supplies to Keep on Hand

1. Chlorine

Chlorine is a common way to disinfect the water that flows through your pool’s filtration system. This chemical helps keep algae and bacteria from growing on the surface of the water or the lining of your pool, so make sure you keep a sufficient supply on hand and store it in a cool, dry place.

2. pH Strips

Testing the pH levels of your pool water weekly is crucial to make sure the water has the right amount of chemicals. Too little can mean your water contains algae or bacteria, but too much can affect sensitive skin and make your eyes sting. Using pH strips to test this balance will help you increase or decrease chemicals as needed.

3. Vacuum

A manual vacuum uses the suction of your pool’s skimmer and filters to suck debris and dirt from the bottom of your pool. Vacuuming regularly will keep the water clear, and it'll prevent the bottom of the pool from getting slippery.

4. Anti-Algae Products

Green water is a good indicator that you have an algae problem. On top of chlorine, anti-algae products can help combat the growth of this bothersome substance. If you go on vacation for an extended period and can’t maintain your pool, algae could start to grow. Throwing in some of these chemicals before you leave will help prevent this while you’re gone.

5. Pool Cover

A pool cover is perhaps the best way to keep bugs and other critters from getting into your pool. There are several different options on the market, so consider the style that’s right for you and your needs. Some covers even use heat from the sun to warm the water up to a more enjoyable temperature.
