A tire blowout occurs when a tire bursts and rapidly loses all of its air pressure. Underinflation, age, overloading, or hitting something that damages the internal structure can all cause a blowout. Such a situation can be dangerous when you don’t know what to do. Be prepared by knowing how to maintain control of your vehicle and safely waiting for your towing company.

What to Do During a Tire Blowout

1. Stay Calm

When your tire blows, you’ll hear a loud sound and feel the vehicle pull sharply to the side of the affected tire. First, stay calm. Do not slam on the brakes; this can cause you to spin out of control. Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and turn it gently to compensate for the pulling to one side. Resist the temptation to jerk the wheel, as you may turn it too far.

2. Move Over

Allow your car to slow down gradually without touching the brakes. Turn on your indicator as you move over and don’t forget to check your blind spot. Get to the right shoulder and pull over as far from the traffic lane as you can.

Once you’ve come to a stop on the road, turn on your emergency flashers. This makes you more visible and tells passing drivers you’re stopped for an emergency. Call a towing company for help and tell them where you are, taking note of a mile marker or exit sign, if necessary. Get out of the vehicle after checking that it is safe to do so. If passing traffic is too close, get out on the passenger side. Place hazard triangles or cones behind your car, with one 10 feet behind and another 100 feet back.
