A rusty coating can take away from the appearance of an otherwise attractive ornamental iron railing. Whether you purchased a home with this feature or placed a custom fabrication item yourself, it’s worth it to dedicate time to care for the material. Iron is susceptible to corroding with age, but it can be restored to its original beauty in a few simple steps. Here is what you need to know.

How to Remove Rust From Iron Railing

1. Clean It Thoroughly

custom fabricationSince wrought iron is not perfectly smooth, it tends to collect grime, scale, and debris more easily than steel and other materials. Use a combination of water and mild dish soap to sand the surface thoroughly with a wire brush. Be gentle, as harsh scrubbing could degrade the clean iron underneath. For corners and crevices, use a toothbrush to remove dirt. Finish by rinsing it thoroughly using a garden hose or a wet rag.

2. Repair the Damage

Since rust causes material degradation, it’s important to repair those areas during this process. That is particularly true if you want to protect your custom fabrication investment and maintain its appearance for years. Using a filler enriched with iron filings is an easy way to blend in with the natural appearance of the existing railing without appearing too obvious. After it cures, smooth the treated area to create an even and cohesive look.

3. Apply a Primer

As soon as you’ve completed the repairs, apply an alkyd primer to the railing. This is an oil-free, rust-proof, largely weather-resistant substance that is ideal for use on custom fabrications made of iron and steel. Don’t skip the primer, as it will help protect the longevity and structural integrity of the railing when it’s exposed to the elements.

4. Finish With Paint

To further protect the structure and to restore its appearance fully, finish with at least two coats of high-quality metal paint after the primer dries completely. The simplest technique is to spray it on, holding the can at least 10 inches away from the railing. If necessary, use a small paintbrush to revise the finish in tight corners.
