Buying new windows for your home is an upgrade that calls for careful thought. This investment will last for many years and directly affects the home’s curb appeal, efficiency, and function. Compare the most popular options to choose the right ones in your replacement; you may find that your home needs a compilation of different styles.

Popular Window Types

1.  Single- & Double-Hung

These windows have two sashes, one on top of the other. They slide on a track to open the window. A single-hung style allows one to move, while double-hung styles allow them both to move. This is the most popular type of window because it’s so versatile.

It fits with any room and doesn’t take up any exterior space when open. A double-hung is ideal in applications where you want to be able to open the top half of a window to keep children or pets from getting out. You’ll need to stand directly in front of it to move the sashes, so avoid placing it in a place where a fixture will be in the way, such as a sink or a piece of furniture.

2. Sliding Sash

3. Bay

These types have three or more windows installed in a line. The two outside windows are installed at an angle, so the wall will move outward for the central window. This architectural feature allows more natural light to enter the room as the sun moves in the sky. It also gives you a natural nook on the inside of the house, ideal for a bench seat, sitting area, or breakfast table.

4. Awning

This is a type of casement window with a hinge at the top. The window pushes outward at the bottom, which allows ventilation while keeping rainfall or other debris out of the room. It’s popular for small, high windows in areas that need ventilation, such as basements or bathrooms.
