Brake shoes are curved pieces of metal inside the drum system of trailers and are used as an alternative to traditional brake pads. They carry the brake lining, which is a piece of friction material, on one side. They are important parts of your trailer assembly that don’t last forever, so you should know how to recognize that your shoes need to be replaced.

A Guide to Trailer Brake Shoes

What They Do

When you apply the brake, the wheel cylinder connected to the pedal pushes the shoe outward. There are two shoe pieces connected by springs, which move in opposite directions as the brakes are applied. Once applied, they push the brake lining material against the inside of the drum. The friction between the lining and the drum is what makes the trailer slow down and stop.

When to Replace Them

trailersThe heat and pressure from braking will wear out your shoes over time, though they should last longer than brake pads usually do. When they start to fail, you’ll notice some clear symptoms. They typically produce a scraping sound when you apply the brakes; they may make the sound even if the vehicle is moving forward in serious cases.

You’ll notice a change in your braking response, feeling like you have to push the pedal down further to get a reaction. The vehicle may take longer to stop, especially when you’re moving at a high speed or pulling a heavy load. The parking brake may also seem “loose,” so your trailer will roll even if you have the brake engaged.
