Many auto repair issues can keep you off the road, and every driver will experience a dead battery. Keep your vehicle running smoothly by understanding how the cell works.

Car Battery FAQ

How long does it last?

A car battery generally lasts between three and five years. Many cells come with replacement warranties that can be used if the battery dies earlier than expected.

What can decrease the cell’s life span?

Batteries in hot climates tend to have shorter life spans because the high temperatures evaporate interior liquids, weaken the charge, and corrode internal components. If you live in a tropical location, like Hawaii, manage the heat by parking in the shade. Additionally, only using your car for short trips prevents the battery from fully recharging while the engine is running, shortening its life span.

How can I tell if it’s dying?

auto repairAs it reaches the end of its life, you may need to crank the engine more to get it to start. You may also experience malfunctions with power windows and other electronic components that draw power from the battery. If you’re worried about your battery, have an auto repair technician check its voltage. If the voltage has dropped below 10V, replace it.

What should I do with my dead battery?

Due to their lead and acid content, car batteries pose an environmental hazard if they’re taken to a landfill. Bring the dead cell to an auto repair facility so that they can properly dispose of it.
