The septic tank, perforated pipes, and drain field are subject to clogs from a lack of maintenance and damage from heavy objects. However, vegetation can inflict serious harm on your septic system as well. Here, learn how trees and shrubs affect this sensitive system and what you can do to keep it damage-free.

How Do Root Systems Affect My Septic Tank?

Trees such as elm, birch, and beech, as well as shrubs such as the Japanese willow, all feature long-reaching root systems. These roots grow up to four times the length of the tree or shrub and can eventually hit your septic tank if they are planted too close. Vegetation must be as far away from the tank as the plant is tall. For example, if a tree reaches 40 feet into in height, it must be at least 40 feet away from your tank.

Roots that do reach septic systems during their search for water put serious pressure on the tank and adjoining pipes. This causes the tank and pipes to crack, resulting in leaks that contaminate the soil and any nearby waterways. Roots also create tank and pipe blockages that cause sewage to back up. If left unchecked, the tank will stop functioning and cause serious plumbing problems. Septic systems with serious tree root damage typically require complete replacements.

What Plants Are Safe to Grow?

Non-woody perennials such as daffodils, tulips, and crocuses all work beautifully over septic tanks, as do wildflowers such as butterfly weed and ornamental grasses such as maiden grass and blue fescue. And while plants and flowers are best for septic tank vegetation, it is possible to use shallow-rooted shrubs and trees such as hollies and dogwoods. Do not plant vegetables, herbs, or fruit over your septic tank due to potential interference with sewage bacteria.
