If your office is relocating, it's best to start preparing three to six months in advance so you can enjoy a smooth, hassle-free moving day. Use that time to sort office equipment, furniture, and other items for donation or recycling, while also acquiring packing materials. Getting everything organized for a move can be challenging, so follow these tips to make the process as easy as possible.

How Do I Prepare My Office for a Move?

1. Pack Electronics In Their Original Boxes

House all computers and other office equipment in their original boxes, if possible. These boxes typically come with special padding and other inserts that'll keep monitors, keyboards, fax machines, and other equipment safe. If you don't have the original packing materials, order packing boxes made for electronics.

Refer to manufacturer's manuals for additional packing instructions, such as removing all cables and placing them in plastic bags, and removing printer cartridges. You also may need to tape down scanner lids and other covers to keep electronic equipment safe.

2. Empty Desk Drawers & Cabinets

As you get closer to moving day, ask your employees to empty their desks, and donate whatever they don't need. Give your team boxes and other packing materials while emphasizing the importance of labeling to avoid confusion, especially if yours is a larger operation.

3. Wrap Bigger Furniture In Blankets

Disassemble all furniture that you can and wrap bigger pieces in blankets and towels to prevent scratches, dents, and other damages. Ask your employees to bring in any towels, throws, and similar items they don't want for this purpose. Once the move is over, you can give the blankets and towels to your local animal shelter for use as bedding.

4. Speak With Your Moving Company

In addition to clearly labeling everything, talk to your moving team before the process starts. Point out boxes featuring computer monitors and other sensitive electronics to devise a plan that ensures damage-free arrivals at your new location. Your moving team may suggest using additional packing materials such as bubble wrap to provide electronics with extra protective layers.
