Do:

Check the headlights.

Driving with headlights that aren’t fully functional can make it difficult for other vehicles to see you. Turn on the vehicle and perform a quick walk around to ensure that each of the lights is on. Keep additional bulbs in the trunk so that timely replacements can be made before heading out.  

Watch out for wildlife.

Always look along the side of the road no matter where you go. Deer, opossum, and foxes have a habit of darting out and catching drivers by surprise, causing them to suddenly veer off to the side of the road. Student drivers and adults who maintain a safe speed and stay alert will have a better chance at preventing accidental run-ins.

Don’t:

Drive when you’re feeling tired.

If you are having a hard time keeping your eyes open, don’t get behind the wheel. Studies have shown that approximately 5,000 fatalities occurred in 2015 because of student drivers and adults who fell asleep while driving. Ask a friend to take you home or book a trip through a ride-share app to avoid taking the risk.

Look directly into other headlights.

It’s common for drivers to neglect to turn down their high beams when approaching another vehicle. When this happens, don’t look directly at them. This will only serve to blind you and increase the potential for an accident. Slow down slightly and glance over to the white line on the side of the road so that you can stay the course until the other car passes by.
