Dentures are the perfect solution if you’re missing multiple teeth. However, like any cosmetic solution, they require diligent care. Staying on top of the general rules and guidelines your dentist provides will ensure you adjust and get the most from them. Here are a few do’s and don’ts of maintaining your dentures.

Do:

Soak them every night.

Dentures, like the rest of your mouth, need to stay hydrated. If they dry out, they can warp, fit uncomfortably, and even break. Soak them while you’re asleep, using a solution recommended by your dentist. You can also keep them hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water.

Rinse them after eating.

dentistDentures can become a breeding ground for bacteria. If food becomes trapped in them, it can promote decay and other complications that lead to gum inflammation. Fully rinse your dentures after eating with clean water, and wash your hands before handling them, so you don’t transfer bacteria.

Don’t:

Neglect dental care.

Just because dentures are a prosthetic doesn’t mean they don’t require dental care. You’ll need to brush and floss them every day to prevent stains and remove stuck food. Use a soft-bristled brush, so you don’t wear down the teeth. If you have trouble flossing, invest in a water-jet flosser, and visit the dentist twice a year for a checkup.

Store them in an unapproved case.

You should only store your dentures in the case your dentist provides. Doing so elsewhere can lead to damage and bacteria. It’s helpful to purchase several cases, so you can keep one in your bag, car, or workplace.
