It’s always good to stock up on supplies you use every day around the house, but did you know that some personal hygiene supplies, like dental products, have expiration dates too? This article explains where to find expiration dates for dental products, and why dentists don’t recommend using personal care items beyond their recommended date.

Brushing Up on Dental Product Expiration Dates

Do Toothpaste and Mouthwash Expire?

Both toothpaste and mouthwash products are made with printed expiration dates, largely in part because they can contain active ingredients, such as fluoride. These expiration dates are found printed on the box or bottle, much like food products you buy at the store.

dentistTo find these dates, evaluate the toothpaste box or mouthwash bottle to look for printing that looks different than the rest of the text. When you find the date, keep in mind that it may be in a six-digit form, such as MMDDYY.

What Are the Risks of Using Expired Dental Products?

Toothpaste expires two years after its manufacture date, while mouthwash expires two to three years after it is initially created. Floss never expires, and toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. While using toothpaste or mouthwash past the expiration date isn’t dangerous, it may counteract some of the benefits of the products since fluoride can degrade over time.

Anti-sensitivity ingredients can also start to lose their efficacy, so talk with your dentist about the age of your toothpaste if you have started to experience problems with sore or sensitive teeth. Better yet, use the complimentary dental products your dentist gives you after every checkup, so you never use outdated items.
