A normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, but during the course of any given day, this number often fluctuates with varying levels of activity. Pediatricians typically consider anything over 100.4 degrees to be a fever, so if your child has a temperature this high, take steps to protect their health and ensure their comfort. Below are a few suggestions that can help you better manage your child's fever.

What to Do When Your Child Has a Fever

1. Apply a Cold Compress

Wet a small towel or washcloth with cool water, wring out the excess, and place it on the child's forehead or neck. This can bring down a fever and make your child feel more at ease. Don't use an ice-pack; these tend to be too cold, and the shock of the temperature difference can be jarring for the child. If the child finds the towel or washcloth is too cold or feels awkward on their skin, place it in a zip-top plastic bag.

2. Try Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen

pediatricianA child over age 2 can take acetaminophen to lower their temperature, but follow the age-specific dosage instructions on the label. Ibuprofen can sometimes bring temperatures down, though the child should be at least six months old to take it, and dosage instructions should be followed closely. Before giving any over-the-counter medications, read the labels carefully to check that the child isn't allergic to any of the ingredients, and always consult their pediatrician. Never give a child aspirin.

3. Give Plenty of Fluids

Fevers can result in fluid loss and dehydration, both of which are serious health risks for children. Provide the child with plenty of fluids, preferably water or fruit juice, and encourage them to take regular sips, even if they're not feeling like drinking much. If the child is under a year old, an oral electrolyte solution will keep them well-hydrated.
