Moving into a new apartment offers a fresh start and an opportunity to put down roots in a different home. But it's no secret that the moving process can be stressful and labor-intensive—no matter how much you may be anticipating the move or looking forward to your new home. To remove some of those stresses and to help make the transition as smooth as possible, bear these do’s and don'ts in mind.

Do:

Start packing early.

As soon as you are approved for the apartment, it's time to start packing up. Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to pack everything in a single day. If at all possible, stretch it out over several days, doing a little bit—such as one room—each day until the apartment is packed. Also, take this as an opportunity to reduce items; throw away or donate unneeded or unused items and streamline both your packing and your life.

Read the lease carefully.

homeOnce you have your copy of the lease, review it carefully. Understand your rights and responsibilities and what is expected of all tenants. Ask the leasing manager for clarification on any issues that are unclear or vague. Put the numbers of the leasing office, maintenance department, and tenant emergency line into your phone's contact list so you have easy access to them when you need them.

Don't:

Neglect a walk-through.

Many apartments give new tenants a checklist or condition report to record the state of the unit at the time of move-in. This is important for getting issues fixed early and for not being held responsible later for damages you didn't cause. Before unpacking, perform a comprehensive walk-through, record all signs of damage, wear and tear, and repairs that are needed, and turn the report into the leasing office. Be sure to request a copy for your own records.

Do it alone.

A move to a new home always comes with a lot of work and a lot of demands on your time and energy. Don't tackle the job alone. Ask friends, family members, and colleagues for assistance. Most people have moved at least once in their lives, and they understand the challenges of the process. You'll be surprised at how many are eager to lend their help and support and take the burden off your shoulders.
