Regular brake service is an important part of owning a car, but not all drivers know when this type of maintenance is necessary. Use this list to identify the signs of worn brakes so you can head to an auto mechanic before serious and lasting damage occurs.

How to Tell When You Need Brake Service

1. Takes Longer to Stop

Braking time can vary based on your vehicle’s weight, your driving speed, and the current road conditions. However, it’s often easy to estimate how long it will take to slow down and stop, unless your brakes are worn. Increased stopping distances are a clear indicator that your breaks have experienced significant wear.

2. Odd Noises

brake serviceMost brake pads are designed to emit a loud and noticeable noise when they are getting low. If you notice a squealing sound when pressing the brake pedal, it’s likely time for brake service. If you don’t hear these early alarms, you may eventually hear a grinding sound warning you that your brake pads are dangerously low.

3. “Soft” Brake Pedal

When your brakes are experiencing issues, the brake pedal may also exhibit problems as well. It might feel soft or spongy, or it may extend all the way to the floorboard when pressed. If the brake pads have become too thin, you could also feel a shuddering sensation due to rotor wear or uneven disc brakes.

4. Vehicle Pulls to the Side

If you press on the brake pedal and your car begins pulling to one side of the road, it’s likely your brakes have worn past the pads. This can result in warped rotors, a collapsed brake hose, or stuck brake calipers. See an auto mechanic immediately if this occurs. If the problem isn’t corrected, it’s likely to spread to your suspension system.

5. Visible Confirmation

The best way to check the health of your brakes is to visually inspect them. Look through the wheel spokes to see your pads, which should be at least a quarter-inch thick. If you can’t see the brake through the wheel, schedule an inspection at your local mechanic.
