Gum disease is one of the most serious oral health conditions. It begins as gingivitis and when untreated, can lead to significant tissue damage and bone and tooth loss. A dentist can help you manage it when it’s caught early. Check for the following symptoms, so you can resolve the issue before it gets out of hand.

What Are the Early Symptoms of Gum Disease?

1. Bleeding Gums

dentistAs plaque builds up on and just below the gumline, it will create inflammation. Sensitive gums will bleed more easily, such as when you’re brushing and flossing. Don’t be alarmed; this early sign of gingivitis is easy to manage. A dentist can remove problematic plaque and tartar during a cleaning, and sticking to brushing and flossing at home will reverse the effects.

2. Receding Gums

As gingivitis advances, your gum will begin to recede. This exposes areas of your teeth that aren’t protected by enamel and will be more prone to decay. They’ll appear whiter than the rest of the tooth. Expect bleeding and red, swollen gums. The next stage of periodontitis isn’t far away, so schedule a teeth cleaning immediately.

3. Tooth Sensitivity

It’s not uncommon to experience a little sensitivity now and then. When it becomes constant, however, it’s likely related to gum disease. As gums recede, the sensitive tooth roots will be more accessible, so the sensation of hot and cold foods will be more extreme. This will only worsen with time and can be followed by constant pain and discomfort.
