Q.  “My teeth hurt when it’s very cold outside. Why does this happen?”

A .  Your front teeth can actually change as much as 120 degrees in temparature! Exposing your teeth to extreme cold or extreme hot can put a lot of pressure on your teeth. Teeth expand and contract as they change temparature. Tiny little cracks in the teeth can occur over time as our teeth adjust to these temparature changes. These cracks shouldn’t cause much harm to our enamel, but they can become uncomfortable. If you have older silver fillings your discomfort may be worse because metal expands and contracts much easier than our natural tooth structure does.

There are other reasons your teeth may be uncomfortable in the colder temperatures. If your tooth enamel has started to wear away your teeth can become very sensitive. Without proper protection from your tooth’s enamel the microscopic nerves in your teeth are more exposed to the winter elements.

Schedule an appointment with Dr. Lunan. She will take a look inside your mouth to see what may be causing your discomfort to temperature changes. She may just reccomend switching to a sensitive toothpaste. In other cases the pain may be a sign of something more serious. Tooth decay can cause sensitivity, especially if it has been there for a while and reached the pulp of the tooth. Dr Lunan will perform tests on your tooth and move forward with the results.

You can try to reduce the pain by breathing through your nose when you are outside in colder temperatures. Brush and floss regularly to fight tooth decay and avoid acidic foods which can increase sensitivity as well.
