Helping your kids establish good oral hygiene habits helps prevent cavities and gum disease, and it also ensures that they’ll continue these habits as they grow older. In addition to taking your child to the family dentist twice a year, you should also teach them good brushing and flossing habits at home. One way to do this is by making daily oral care fun.

4 Tips for Getting Your Kids to Brush and Floss

1. Make It a Family Activity

Young children need supervision while brushing their teeth, so what better way to do that than doing it together? Kids love imitating their parents, so brushing together allows you to model good habits and technique while watching your little one to make sure they’re brushing properly.

2. Offer Child-Friendly Tools

Allow your child to choose a soft-bristled toothpaste in the appropriate size with a favorite cartoon character, princess, or superhero on it, and try a child-friendly toothpaste in a milder flavor than the typical mint used for adult toothpaste. Just be sure to choose one that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. If you’re not sure which products are best for your child, ask your family dentist for a recommendation.

3. Turn it Into a Game

Your family dentist likely recommended brushing for two minutes twice a day, but for a little one, two minutes can feel like 20 minutes. Keep your child engaged with brushing by using an app that helps count down the time using music, stories, and games to keep kids focused. You can also play music on your own or read a short story while your child brushes.

4. Offer Rewards

If your child has a reward chart for other behaviors or chores, add a line for tooth brushing and give them a sticker or star every time they brush and floss. Tying good oral hygiene habits to positive reinforcement helps establish a healthy habit and your expectations for your child.
