A well-maintained wood fence can instantly enhance a home's curb appeal and overall aesthetics. Compared to metal and vinyl barriers, however, wood fences are more susceptible to wear and tear, especially under harsh weather conditions. With regular maintenance, including routine cleaning, they can retain their quality and appeal for a long time. Here are three tips to keep in mind when cleaning your wood fence.

Tips to Remember When Cleaning Your Wood Fence

1. Clean Collected Gunk Before Washing

fence-Kalispell-MTMake sure to remove any gunk first before using a pressure washer or cleaning your fence by hand. Use a steel brush to scrape off grease or grime that had collected on the surface. In the case of caked-on mud, wet the surface lightly before scrubbing away. However, be careful not to apply too much pressure when cleaning, as doing so can chip away the fence's paint.

2. Remove Stains With Oxygenated Bleach

Use oxygenated bleach to get rid of surface stains without damaging your fence. Prepare the bleach following the instructions on the package. Apply the solution on the planks using a wide paintbrush. After 15 minutes, scrub off the stains and rinse thoroughly to get rid of any bleach residue.

3. Get Rid of Molds & Mildew

To remove mold, scrub your fence with a solution of water and chlorine bleach. Make sure to get rid of mold growth entirely before rinsing. If you need to remove mildew, prepare a mixture of vinegar and water. Rub this on your fence then wash it off with water.
