The ideal indoor humidity is about 40% to 50%. Higher than that, and it starts to get uncomfortable, and you can also start to grow mold in your home, which is both a cosmetic problem and a health hazard. To keep the humidity down, follow these steps with your HVAC systems and daily habits.

HVAC Tips to Lower Humidity

1. Run Your Furnace or AC

Your home's HVAC equipment naturally reduces the moisture in the air. The air conditioner collects condensation steadily in its drip pan and drains it outside. Meanwhile, a propane- or other fuel-burning furnace dries out the air that circulates through it.

2. Install a Dehumidifier

HVACIf your existing HVAC equipment doesn't do enough to dry out the air, a dedicated dehumidifier will. You can get a stand-alone unit or add one to your home's central HVAC system. Either way, the unit will circulate air through itself and draw out moisture in much the same way an air conditioner does—by running the air over cold coils that cause the water to condense.

3. Identify Sources

Find and minimize sources of humidity throughout your home. Leaking pipes are significant contributors, and repairing them should create a significant drop in humidity. If you dry your clothes indoors, try drying them outside on a line or moving the dryer out to a shed to keep the moisture out of the house. You can also take cooler showers and use the stove less often to generate less steam.
