A fireplace is a stunning focal point that provides warmth, along with a cozy and romantic ambiance. If you take care of your fireplace, you can expect it to work flawlessly for years to come. Knowing the elements of this space and the types of fireplace repair they typically need will help.

5 Parts of a Fireplace

1. Flue

The flue is the passage that funnels the smoke from the fireplace to the outdoors. It’s often made of stainless steel or clay. A common problem with the flue is creosote buildup, as the smoke leaves behind a residue. Creosote is flammable and can cause chimney fires. Routine chimney cleaning can prevent this.

2. Firebox

chimney cleaningThis is the area inside of the fireplace where the fire is built. It captures the smoke to funnel it up the flue. Cracks may appear here from the stress of extreme heat over time, which can allow dangerous gases and smoke to escape and may risk fire damage to your home. Have a professional inspect it annually and seek immediate fireplace repair if you see deteriorating joints or cracks.

3. Damper

This separates the firebox from the smoke chamber above. It is designed to keep cold air from traveling down into the room when there is not a fire burning. Make sure to avoid the mistake of not opening it all the way when the fire is lit, which can lead to smoke buildup. The damper should always be completely open until the fire is fully out.

4. Smoke Chamber

This is the connection between the firebox and the flue. It has a smoke shelf at the bottom of it, which prevents downdraft, rain or soot from going into the fireplace. If it gets corroded or thick with creosote buildup, it can push smoke back into the home. It should be cleaned and inspected once a year and replaced if needed.

5. Chimney

The chimney surrounds the flue. It contains the heat inside the flue so it won’t affect the flammable building materials in the rest of the home. A common issue with this is if the brickwork shifts, as this creates leaks where water can enter the chimney. Tuckpointing is a common fireplace repair technique, which is necessary when you see cracks in your mortar.
