Organizing the boxes in a storage unit will make it easy for you to retrieve items later. Here are a few tips to help you organize and maintain a clean and accessible unit.

3 Storage Unit Organization Tips

1. Create a Layout

A layout is particularly useful if you plan on using long-term storage. Sketch out a layout showing where each box is so you’ll know where to find the items you need. Keep a copy of the layout at home, and tape one on the wall in the unit.

If the unit is large enough, create an aisle for easy access. Place boxes containing items you may need toward the front, such as clothing, seasonal items, and important documents. Larger items and furniture you know you won’t use should go in the back of the unit.

2. Keep Track of Everything

If this seems too time-consuming, you can write a quick summary of the box’s contents on the side instead. Make sure the writing faces out.

3. Stacking

Large, heavy items should be placed first, with smaller, lighter ones on top. Select sturdy boxes if you plan to stack them. Keep in mind that boxes of the same size will hold up better since their weight will distribute more evenly across the tops.

Rather than stacking boxes too high, which may be at risk of falling, adding shelves to the side of the unit will provide more vertical space. It also protects boxes from spills and rodents.
