Every parent can expect their child to “act out” once in a while, whether they aren’t allowed to take a certain toy out or don’t feel like getting dressed for the day. However, in some cases, your child might be more than just annoyed or upset that they didn’t get their way. They may need to see a counselor to get to the root of their mental or behavioral challenges. Here are just some of the treatable issues your child could be dealing with.

3 Reasons for Behavioral Trouble in Children

1. Learning Disability

In some cases, your child may be more upset than normal because they have a learning disability and are frustrated with the task in front of them. For example, a child with dyslexia may feel upset when they see their peers learning how to write their names, or feel intense pressure when you ask them to help read off an item on the grocery list. As a result, they may act out to communicate this frustration to parents or teachers and avoid continuing the exercise.

2. Mental Health Condition

For example, children with autism might display aggressive behaviors when asked to continually answer a question, and those with obsessive-compulsive disorder might exhibit oppositional behavior by refusing to stop the action that is comforting them. ADHD and anxiety could also cause your child to throw temper tantrums, act defiantly, or break down and cry.

3. Sensory Overload

Some children deal with sensory processing disorders, which can be hard for the average parent to notice without the help of a counselor. These children may become extremely overwhelmed by the abundance of visual stimuli in a toy store, a loud classroom of children, or even the sensation of multiple textures when trying on clothes in a dressing room. They might even experience physical pain as a result of sensory overload.
